Orange blossoms poked up from the dry dirt
from north to south and east to west
the field of orange covered the hard packed soil
just as the best grapes develop in soil that the vine has to fight to survive in,
the poppies grew, and multiplied, and brought beauty to this arid land
there were families upon families of flowers, each in their designated plot
one teenage blossom was hot and cranky from the sun blasting down on him all day,
he asked his parents if he could please visit his friends a plot over
"no, its not safe," said his dad
"what could go wrong," asked the inquisitive child
"worms, birds, and people could pick you and carry you away"
"but they could do that here also," replied the child
"yes, but here I am here to protect you"
the child persisted,
"you can't stop any of these bad things from happening"
"true," said the dad
"yet, I feel safer if you stay here"
yet, the child persisted
"I want to explore"
"but why?" insisted the dad
"because I am made for great things,
I am made to be an adventurer, an explorer, and inquisitor,
I am made to create great happiness for others,"
the dad replied, "you can do none of those things,
you are only a flower,"
as he was protesting,
Poppy was plucked from the earth by a tenacious child
look mama, "look at this most beautiful flower I found,"
the child put Poppy in her hair and took off running through the fields
Poppy felt the wind on his flesh, the cool cool breeze on his petals,
the speed was exhilarating, leaving little Poppy feeling a little intoxicated
the child raced here and fro, climbed up hills and rolled down them,
making sure never to squash Poppy
the child then climbed up into a tree and Poppy could see all of the fields from a mile high in the sky
he saw the most beautiful sight of acres upon acres of the most brilliant orange he had ever seen
he was so proud that his family and friends were making this bountiful display of color
he napped with the little girl in the tree, and as the sun was setting,
the child climbed down the tree and walked along the path until she found her parents
quite thirsty from all the adventures of my day,
I begin to wilt,
when the child gave me refreshing water to drink,
I perked up
my color and beauty were praised, and I was set high on a mantle for all to enjoy
it was the best day of my life
as night fell,
I rested and dreamt of the adventures that lay ahead
